Catalan uses the Latin alphabet, but with an orthography of its own that Spanish does not share. Two marks are unmistakable: the ela geminada l·l — a geminate "l" with a raised middle dot, in col·legi or paral·lel — and the ç (c trencada), which stands before a, o, u for the s-sound, as in març or Barça. Autocorrect routinely "fixes" col·legi into collegi, col.legi or col-legi — all three break the IEC norm and are obvious to any Catalan reader.

Catalan is also pluricentric: the Catalan of the Principat follows the norm of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans, Valencian additionally that of the Acadèmia Valenciana de la Llengua, and the Balearics have their own forms. For an official document in València, a Valencian version is not the same as a text from Barcelona. For official use, an authorised translator issues a certified translation; whether an apostille is also needed is something we check in advance — it is issued by the competent authority, not by the translation agency.

Why "I know Spanish" is not enough here

None of these is a Spanish grammar mistake — they arise because Catalan is a separate language with its own norm, right down to elision and the personal article (l'home, en/na before names). They only surface at the receiving end: the Generalitat, the Valencian authority, the Catalan business partner. That is exactly where native professional translation with a field earns its place.

For submission to German authorities and courts, a court-authorised translator (in German, ermächtigter Übersetzer, publicly authorised under German state law) produces a certified translation with stamp, signature and certification note — recognised nationwide. For Catalan documents the independent written standard of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans governs, and bilingual Catalan/Castilian forms are transferred in full.

In Spain, sworn translators (traductor jurat / traductor jurado) are appointed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the Generalitat de Catalunya separately certifying sworn translators of Catalan through its language-policy directorate. A German authorised translator is therefore not automatically admitted in Spain, and vice versa. We clarify before the project which country the document is for, and set the form valid there — following FÜD's documented quality process; where the service is delivered under DIN EN ISO 17100, the required second-person revision is included. Whether an apostille is additionally required (Spain and Germany are both parties to the Hague Apostille Convention) we check in advance. The apostille itself is issued by the competent authority — the FÜD does not issue apostilles.

Do you translate both Catalan to German and Catalan to English?

Yes. Catalan ⇄ German is the usual pairing for German authorities, courts and business partners; Catalan ⇄ English covers international contexts – applications, contracts and documentation exchanged in English. A native-speaker specialist is assigned to each direction.

Is Catalan just a dialect of Spanish?

No. Catalan is a Romance language in its own right, with its own written standard (Institut d'Estudis Catalans), co-official in Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and — as the Valencian variety — in Valencia, and the sole official language of Andorra. A Spanish translator is not a substitute for a native Catalan specialist.

Do you translate into Catalan or into Valencian?
